Another 139 AIDS cases were reported in Los Angeles County during March, but County Supervisor Ed Edelman said the figure reflects efforts by health officials to complete investigation of a backlog of suspected cases. The average monthly total of newly reported cases during the last part of 1986 and in January of this year was 100. The February total was up to 151 as investigators reduced the backlog of suspected cases from 200 to 143. By the end of March, there were 2,965 cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome in the county, including 16 involving children under the age of 5. AIDS so far has been responsible for 1,807 deaths in the county.
