Posters showing the face of Pope John Paul II as it might be seen through a gun sight were found on the outside walls of about 20 buildings in Cologne, police said today.

Cologne will be the first stop on the pontiff’s trip to West Germany starting April 30.

Police spokesman Werner Schmidt said: “We do not think this group is planning an attack. If they were, they would not be announcing it like this in advance.

“We see this instead as just being something in grossly bad taste,” Schmidt said. “We do not think it is a dangerous situation.”

The posters showed a profile of the pontiff superimposed by three concentric circles with cross hairs in the center.

Below the picture, in German, were the words “For only blessed is he who enters the kingdom of heaven.”
