Former President Jimmy Carter is taking up a hammer and saw in Northern California to do volunteer carpenter work for a Christian organization that has built homes for poor people around the world. Carter called his work with Habitat for Humanity one of the “exciting new dimensions of my life since the White House.” The non-profit group builds housing with volunteer help and donated or purchased materials. Low-income people who would otherwise be homeless or forced to live in squalid shelters are charged a small monthly rent to live in the dwellings. The organization is planning projects in Santa Cruz, Stockton and San Jose.
