Construction has begun on Crossroads, a $23.3-million commercial center located on 33 acres at the southwest corner of Culver Drive and Barranca Parkway, within the new residential district of Westpark in Irvine.

Crossroads is being developed under a joint agreement between Irvine Retail Properties Co. and Diversified Shopping Centers of Costa Mesa.

The 331,000-square-foot center will be anchored by a two-level, 90,000-square-foot Mervyn’s department store, another major store, three free-standing restaurants, financial institutions and some 45 retail shops. The architect is James W. Foug & Associates of Palo Alto; Lyle Parks Jr. Inc. of La Habra is the general contractor.
