Freighter Sinking Off Canada
A Panamanian registered bulk carrier with 24 people on board was sinking about 350 miles south of Newfoundland, a Canadian Defense Department spokesman said today.
The spokesman said the vessel was sinking in 40-knot winds and nearly 30 foot high seas. Two Canadian aircraft were heading to the scene and a Canadian scientific research vessel about 40 nautical miles from the freighter was en route to the area. A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman in New York said a U.S. Naval vessel about 200 miles from the site had also been diverted to aid in rescue operations.
