Duarte : City Council Appointment

Share

The City Council will appoint a replacement for James Coughlin, who has resigned because he is applying for the position of city attorney. Coughlin, who has served on the council for 19 years, said he had not intended to run for reelection in November when his term expires. The position of city attorney will become vacant June 30 when William Camil resigns. The council will interview applicants for Coughlin’s position Tuesday and is expected to appoint a replacement by May 12. The new council member could run for election as an appointed incumbent in November. The council also had the option of calling a special election or leaving the seat unfilled until the next election, but Mayor John Van Doren said the special election would be too close to the regular election and that the council did not want to leave the seat unfilled for six months.
