RANGOON, Burma —
Eight people were killed and 58 wounded when rebels opened fire on a double-decker river boat in eastern Burma, Rangoon newspapers reported Wednesday.
The rebels, who informed sources said belong to the New Mon State party, attacked the state-owned boat on Monday near Mudon south of Moulmein, the newspapers said.
The Mons are one of about a dozen ethnic minorities in Burma fighting for autonomy from the central government in Rangoon.
