Sen. Howard M. Metzenbaum (D-Ohio), acting a day after a university scientist warned NutraSweet may be linked to behavioral changes, announced he will hold a hearing on the safety of the popular artificial sweetener. Metzenbaum has long questioned whether NutraSweet was adequately tested before its 1981 approval. University of Illinois scientist Reuben Matalon reported that a study of adults given NutraSweet showed sharply elevated levels of phenylalanine, which has been linked to behavioral changes such as reduced attention span and loss of memory.
