Polish police have detained more than a dozen opposition activists in advance of planned anti-government demonstrations marking May Day, official spokesman Jerzy Urban said in Warsaw. The group, including seven in the capital, was making preparations to disrupt official May Day ceremonies, he added. Supporters of the banned Solidarity independent trade union and other opposition groups had threatened to demonstrate in Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw. Opposition sources said a number of other people have gone into hiding to avoid the roundup. Polish law allows for detainees to be held for up to 48 hours without charge.
