Restored British Engines

Share

Several years ago you printed the name and address of the National Traction Engine Trust secretary (United Kingdom). Last June my wife and I spent a very enjoyable day at the Great Amwell Traction Engine Rally near Hoddesdon, about 30 miles north of London. The British have restored 800 or more of these classic show engines and farm and industrial engines. I counted more than 50 beautifully restored engines and steam lorries at the meet we attended.

Also, there were calliopes, other music wagons, stationary engines, antique autos, tractors and motorcycles. There was a brass band, other entertainment, food and drink plus other vendors. Admission was 2.50 per person. The atmosphere was that of a well-run country fair.

Anyone desiring a list of the approved rallies should send an International Postal Coupon (80 cents) purchased from the U.S. Post Office and his name and address to R. A. Copp, 24 Cottimore Lane, Walton on Thames, Surrey KT12 2BS, United Kingdom. With the dollar going down, it might be better to send two coupons to be sure of covering airmail; surface mail takes five to six weeks.
