First Wachovia Corp. of Winston-Salem, N.C., named John G. Medlin Jr. chairman, succeeding Thomas R. Williams, who retired Thursday. Medlin will continue as president and CEO. Williams, who will remain a director, is forming Wales Group Inc. to handle his other businesses and investments.
