Thousands of U.S. troops were massed aboard ships off the North Carolina coast in preparation for a Central American military exercise dubbed Operation Solid Shield. Members of the Honduran army and navy will join them in an amphibious assault May 13 on a beach near Puerto Castillo in Honduras, less than 100 miles from the Nicaraguan border.
