Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres postponed a debate on Peres’ plan for an international peace conference on the Middle East, which is threatening to topple their coalition government. The two leaders agreed in a 50-minute meeting to put off until Monday the discussion that had been set for today in the 10-member inner Cabinet. The delay could allow Shamir and Peres to work out a compromise and continue the coalition of the Likud Bloc and the Labor Alignment. Peres has proposed that Israel join a U.N.-convened Mideast conference, but Shamir continues to oppose international sponsorship.
