Leftist rebels killed the commander of a Salvadoran civil defense unit in central Cabanas province, and the insurgents reportedly blacked out parts of other provinces. Col. Mauricio Hernandez, chief military spokesman, said in San Salvador that the rebels attacked the town of Villa Victoria, 40 miles northeast of the capital, where the commander, who was not named, was killed. According to civilians, the rebels blew up a series of high-tension power lines, blacking out Usulutan province and leaving parts of San Miguel and La Paz provinces without electricity.
