The Thai government is taking steps to stem a flood of X-rated films on videotape and cable television in Thailand, parliamentary officials announced Wednesday. Under the law--which could go into effect as early as Friday--operators who rent or show such films will be liable to a maximum fine of $770 or a one-year jail term or both. Some Bangkok video shops near schools have begun showing pornographic films in back rooms for 40 cents. Cable television, which costs only $24 a month for all-night movies, has been spreading rapidly in the provinces.
