The World Jewish Congress passed a brief resolution congratulating Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III for the U.S. decision to bar Austrian President Kurt Waldheim as it opened its first meeting in a Soviet Bloc country. In remarks to 90 delegates from 30 nations who gathered in Budapest, Hungary, President Edgar M. Bronfman said that “it’s the job of the World Jewish Congress to fight anti-Semitism (but) fighting anti-Semitism is not consistent with fighting peoples and nations.” Bronfman said he will try to lead the Jewish world into a reconciliation with Austria. Bronfman also said that as many as 14,000 Jews might be permitted to leave the Soviet Union this year.
