Dakota Governor Enters Talks With Meatpackers
Gov. George S. Mickelson met with union officials and representatives of the John Morrell & Co. meatpacking plant Wednesday, in an effort to end a sympathy strike that has been marred by violence.
About 1,000 strikers Wednesday converged on the plant, which is the state’s largest employer. They hurled rocks and shouted “Scab!” at workers who crossed the picket line, authorities said.
Six people were arrested in the demonstration, the largest since about 2,500 members of the United Food and Commerical Workers union struck the plant Friday to honor a picket line of Morrell employees from Sioux City, Iowa.
