As many as half the nation’s homeless people may be infected with tuberculosis, forming “a large reservoir” of potential cases of the once-dreaded lung disease, federal health officials said. Recent studies have shown that between 2% and 7% of the homeless have tuberculosis, a rate anywhere from 150 to 300 times higher than the national average.
