Greek Strikes Begin

ATHENS —
About 300,000 workers Thursday began a series of strikes throughout Greece, demanding wage increases and an end to an austerity program by Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou’s Socialist government. State hospitals carried out only emergency services, state banks and schools were closed and some rail and bus services were affected.
