The University of Southern California held its 104th spring graduation ceremony Friday in Alumni Memorial Park.

Degrees: USC President James H. Zumberge conferred degrees on more than 6,000 students, including 3,250 undergraduates, 2,000 master’s, 150 doctoral and 600 professional candidates.

Speakers: Lee Iacocca, head of Chrysler Corp. “ . . . With leadership, you either use it or lose it. That’s the great danger that America faces in our trade relations today, and that’s a great danger we all face in the years ahead. Remember that as you prepare for leadership in the 21st Century.”

Also speaking was valedictorian Brian Paul Scottoline, a biological sciences and molecular biology major.

Honorary Degrees:

Iacocca, doctor of science, developed the Mustang during 32 years with Ford Motor Co. before joining Chrysler in 1978 as president, chief operating officer and board member. “The same foresight that directed his rescue of Chrysler has led him to champion the use of new engineering and manufacturing processes, fortifying the position of American industry against foreign competition.”

Dr. James S. Coleman, university professor in sociology at the University of Chicago, who, as “one of the pioneers of modern social science, has written 26 books that apply diverse modes of scientific inquiry to the solution of social problems.”

Dr. Frank Press, president of the National Academy of Sciences, who “ . . . helped organize the International Geophysical Year. . . . He is internationally recognized for his work in geophysics, oceanography, lunar and planetary science.”
