The World : Italy Convicts 2 as Spies
A Rome court convicted Victor Pronine, a former official of the Soviet airline Aeroflot, and Azeglio Negrino, an Italian, on charges of spying and sentenced them to prison terms of 5 1/2 and 6 years, respectively. Victor Konyaev, a second Soviet citizen arrested in the case, was acquitted. The two Soviets were tried in absentia because they fled to the Soviet Union after being freed on bond. The two convicted men were arrested Feb. 15, 1983, as Negrino was about to hand over a briefcase containing military secrets to Pronine.
