The West German government plans to ban smoking in hospitals, medical offices, schools and many public offices, a member of parliament said Saturday.

Roland Sauer, a health adviser to Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s ruling Christian Democratic Union party, told the Cologne Express newspaper any employee in any office who disapproved of the habit would have the right to have it banned. Taxes on all tobacco products also would be increased.

Sauer said the bill would be drawn up this year and would have little difficulty in gaining a majority in Parliament.

More than 100,000 West Germans die from smoking-related illnesses a year, he said.
