The University of Notre Dame announced Saturday a $300-million fund-raising drive, reportedly the largest ever undertaken by a Catholic university.

The announcement came hours before the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, president of Notre Dame, delivered a televised farewell address, beamed by satellite to dozens of alumni clubs, to mark his retirement after 35 years in office.
