Phil Ford, former University of North Carolina and National Basketball Assn. guard, has admitted that he used cocaine while playing in the NBA.
“I did use the drug (cocaine), but it’s something that’s behind me,” Ford told the Charlotte Observer. “I haven’t drunk anything or used any drugs in almost a year and a half.
“We (Walter Davis and Ford) did some drugs together, but we didn’t see each other that much. It wasn’t like I saw him every day. I really didn’t do it (cocaine) that much.”
Ford and Davis were teammates at North Carolina.
Ford, 31, played for Kansas City, New Jersey, Milwaukee and Houston. His last season was 1984-85, although he tried out with the Golden State Warriors before this season.
“Mostly, my drug of choice was alcohol,” Ford told the newspaper. “I got treatment for it, and it’s something that I work on every day. I’m taking it one day at a time.”
Davis has named several current and former NBA players, including Ford, as cocaine users in testimony before a grand jury, according to transcripts obtained by an Arizona newspaper.
