Hernell (Jeep) Jackson and a teammate on the University of Texas El Paso basketball team used cocaine the night before Jackson’s death, according to El Paso police reports.

According to a police search warrant, Jackson, the other player and several unidentified people went to Jackson’s apartment at about 8:30 p.m. May 1 with the intention of using cocaine.

Jackson, 23, collapsed and died May 2 during an exhibition game at Ft. Bliss. Police suspect cocaine use was the cause of death, but toxicology and other laboratory tests on Jackson’s body have not been completed.
