The World : Guatemala Abuses Alleged

Share

Political killings and “disappearances” have continued in Guatemala despite the election 16 months ago of the nation’s first civilian government in 17 years, Amnesty International said in a report. The London-based human rights organization said “the tide of abuses” in Guatemala has abated since President Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo came to power in January, 1986. But it added that it “continues to receive reports of disappearances and political killings” since then, despite government pledges to act against abuses. In December, 1986, Cerezo announced the formation of a commission to investigate human rights abuses but said he has no plans to place military leaders on trial.
