Ex-Rep. Hansen’s Parole Revoked; He Faces 6 More Months in Prison

Federal authorities on Monday revoked the parole of former Rep. George Hansen and ordered him to complete the remaining six months of his prison sentence for violating congressional ethics laws, the Justice Department said.

“He will be transferred to a federal facility for the remainder of his sentence, but it has not been decided where or when,” department spokesman Joe Krovisky said.

Hansen, a Republican from Idaho, has been jailed in nearby Alexandria, Va., since he was arrested on April 15 in Omaha, Neb., for violating the terms of his December release from prison.

The announcement was made after a fourth parole commissioner cast a concurring vote to revoke Hansen’s parole and allow credit toward his sentence of only about three weeks of the four months he spent out of jail.

Hansen was released on Dec. 19 from the federal penitentiary in Petersburg, Va. Under parole regulations, he was to remain in Virginia and file periodic financial statements. The Justice Department said that the first statement, due on Jan. 7, did not comply with regulations.

The exact date of Hansen’s release has not been computed.

Hansen, 56, served seven terms in the House before being convicted in 1984 of falsifying financial disclosure statements.
