The Reagan Administration has decided it will not send Ambassador William F. Eagleton back to his post in Syria, the State Department announced Tuesday.

Eagleton was withdrawn last November to protest Syrian intelligence officers’ alleged involvement in an attempt to bomb an Israeli jetliner in London.

“We have not tracked terrorism to Syria since that attempt,” said a State Department official. But he said Washington wants Syria to take steps against terrorists.
