A kid’s first trip to the beauty salon can be a hair-raising experience. Just ask 14-month-old Mats Hedlund of Huntington Beach or 13-month-old Garrett Lundy of Costa Mesa, none too happy with their new coiffures.

“Boys have a tendency to cry more than girls,” says Leticia August, owner of Rainbow Kids Hairstlying shop in Huntington Beach. Mom and Dad can stay nearby, but if a child persists in reaching for his or her parents, they are banished to the waiting room until the cut is completed, August says.

“You can do a lot with children’s hair. They are easy to please,” August says. “Adults are more particular.”
