Prince Norodom Sihanouk announced that he will step down for one year as head of Cambodia’s resistance movement to protest alleged attacks on his forces by the Communist Khmer Rouge, one of his partners in the three-party Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea. Sihanouk said in a statement in Beijing that he would return as leader only if the Khmer Rouge stopped attacking his supporters and halted human rights abuses in refugee camps they control in Thailand.
