Hundreds of Peruvian national police extended their illegal strike indefinitely as army troops and armored vehicles cordoned off the Lima police station where the strike leaders were holed up. President Alan Garcia named a two-man negotiating team to meet with strike leaders and reach a quick resolution. The strikers are demanding an across-the-board pay increase of $185 a month, a 48-hour week and overtime pay. Most police now receive the equivalent of about $250 a month.
