The Irvine manufacturer of artificial heart valves blamed for at least 125 deaths has settled a $32-million lawsuit filed by a Canadian man who nearly died when one of the valves broke inside him, the man’s lawyer said. Glenn Wallace’s case against Shiley Inc. had been scheduled to go to jury trial Monday in Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana. But the case was settled May 4 for a sum that both sides agreed to keep confidential, Wallace’s attorney, Vance Simonds Jr., said Friday. Wallace had sought $30 million in punitive damages and $2 million in general and special damages. Simonds said Wallace was “very pleased and satisfied” with the settlement and expects to receive payment by June 3.
