A $225,000 signing bonus; a contract stipulation similar to his brother’s, guaranteeing that he will be off between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday so that he can observe Seventh-day Adventist dictates; a major league contract in his third year; invitations to the major league spring training camp every year; a $75,000 bonus when he makes his major league debut; four airplane tickets a year for five years so that his family can see him pitch; a 1987 black Corvette for himself and a Cutlass Supreme for his father.

Said an American League scout, having returned recently from the Caribbean: “He’s good, but not that good.”
