“The Practical Guide to Japanese Signs,” written by Tae Moriyama and translated by Jeffrey Cohen, is designed to help travelers find their way around Japan.

Each listing includes the Japanese characters, their transliteration into Roman letters and the meaning in English. Pronunciation hints are also given.

The book guides travelers through train and subway stations, airports, post offices and banks. It tells how to identify the correct bus and how to decipher the Japanese numerical symbols.

There are also sections on tourist attractions, such as gardens, shrines and temples.
