American Health Services Corp., a Newport Beach-based operator of outpatient diagnostic centers, reported a net loss of $1 million for the first quarter, compared with a net loss of $444,524 a year earlier. Revenues for the quarter of $1.3 million were almost double the year-ago figure of $655,843.

Company officials said income from operations of the diagnostic centers was $277,283 for the quarter, compared with a net loss of $60,660 for the same period last year. The 1987 first-quarter loss was primarily caused by research and development expenses associated with a new system of therapy for chronic pain and for relief of chemical addiction withdrawal symptoms.

America Health, previously called NMR Centers Inc., recently changed its name to reflect its expansion into diverse methods of diagnostic treatment. Previously, the company--in operation two years--specialized in the medical use of nuclear magnetic imagery machines, President Lewis Meyer said.
