Peruvian soldiers took control of Lima in the fourth day of an illegal police walkout that has virtually paralyzed the capital. Troops in combat gear fired bursts of automatic weapons fire in the air as an estimated 5,000 striking policemen marched on Congress to press demands for a pay increase of $185 a month. Guillermo Larco Cox, vice president of the Senate, came out of the Congress building and met with two strike leaders. He told them he could promise them nothing but invited them to meet with President Alan Garcia.
