China has launched a competition to choose a new flag and emblem for Hong Kong, due to be handed over from British to Chinese control in 1997, the official New China News Agency said Tuesday.

Entries “should convey the position of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the spirit of ‘one country, two systems,’ ” the agency quoted an announcement by the Hong Kong Basic Law Drafting Committee as saying.

China has promised to preserve Hong Kong’s capitalist system for 50 years after it takes control of the territory.

The contest is open to entries from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The winner will receive a prize, the agency said.
