The death toll in Hindu-Muslim riots in north India rose to 47 after fresh violence in Meerut, where mobs burned houses and shops. Five were killed in Meerut and eight died of wounds received earlier, bringing the city’s death toll to 39 since riots began five days ago. Meerut, 47 miles northeast of New Delhi, was the hardest hit of three cities affected by communal violence that authorities blamed on local disputes.
