Reagan’s Commencement Speech at Tuskegee

Share

With appalling disbelief I read of President Reagan’s commencement speech (Times, May 11) at all-black Tuskegee University in Alabama.

It is astonishing what brazen deceitful ploys Reagan uses to attempt to extricate himself from uncomfortable uneasy circumstances his bad judgment has placed him in.

It is obvious that his Tuskegee trip and recent others is to divert as much as possible public attention from his deep involvement in the Iran- contra scandal hearings.

Reagan has done his utmost to sidetrack, derail and subvert progress made by civil rights activists over the past 20 years. He has clearly shown contempt for civil rights and affirmative action and cares naught for causes relating to black Americans.

He openly approved public funding for racially segregated institutions. He has systematically debilitated the Civil Rights Commission, leaving it an ineffective powerless inert shell of its former influence.

Reagan’s Tuskegee junket is the height of flagrant hypocrisy, pretense and sham.
