The State Department announced that, beginning June 1, reporters from the Soviet Union, Romania, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria and Poland will be required to have escorts while in the department’s building in Washington. Currently, all reporters--American and foreign--who regularly cover the State Department are issued press passes that allow them to enter the building unaccompanied and to go to the press room and other areas. A department spokeswoman said the change was made for security reasons and noted that Soviet and Warsaw Pact diplomats are already required to be escorted when visiting the building.
