A contingent of 350 U.S. troops has ended 13 days of joint exercises with 1,000 Bolivian soldiers in the northern jungle near Peru, the U.S. Embassy said in La Paz, the Bolivian capital. Bolivian Col. Freddy Ordonez said in a speech that Bolivian troops were taught counterinsurgency techniques. The exercises, which included the use of Huey UH-1H helicopters, were carried out in areas bordering Peru, a country in which Maoist Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas have waged a seven-year campaign against the government.
