Claims that a probe into drug use at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was halted just as investigators were starting to check workers in sensitive nuclear weapons areas, are under investigation by a congressional subcommittee, according to the San Francisco Examiner. The newspaper said a House oversight subcommittee is looking into charges that Livermore associate director James S. Kahn called off the investigation because of fears of bad publicity about drug use at the top-secret laboratory. The Livermore laboratory officially denied any cover-up, saying the investigation was halted only because investigators had run out of leads and officials wanted to go ahead with the arrests of six people who had been found to be possessing or dealing in drugs.
