The Nation : Pole Held in U.S. Custody
Immigration officials in New York said that they planned to hold a 31-year-old Polish national who jumped from a tour boat at the base of Niagara Falls and swam to the United States. Benedict Ferro, district director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, refused to comment on reports that the man was a Polish soldier seeking political asylum. The man jumped from the Maid of the Mist tour boat, which had left from the Canadian side of the Niagara River, and swam 30 or 40 yards to American territory at the Cave of the Winds, a passageway under the American falls in New York. Ferro refused to release information on the man.
