The congressional committee investigating the Iran- contra scandal has delayed an appearance by Albert Hakim, the Iranian-born arms dealer considered a key figure in the scandal, sources said today.

Hakim was scheduled to testify Wednesday when the committee resumes its hearings after the Memorial Day recess, but his appearance was postponed and no new date set.

Congressional sources said investigators questioned Hakim over the weekend and decided to delay his appearance before the joint House-Senate committee so they could develop information he gave them.

Hakim was questioned by the investigators in Washington, according to the sources, and continues to cooperate in the investigation.

A close associate of retired Maj. Gen. Richard V. Secord, Hakim is believed to be able to help investigators trace the trail of money from the secret sale of U.S. arms to Iran to the diversion of profits to the Nicaraguan contras.

Secord has told the joint committee that $8 million remains in Swiss bank accounts controlled by Hakim and that he believed the money was his and Hakim’s to use. The two men were involved in the Iranian arms deal as well as the military supply operation to the contras.

The committee intends to call Robert Dutton Wednesday as the next witness. Dutton, a former Secord associate, has been granted limited immunity from prosecution.
