Government officials in parts of the Midwest are inadequately overseeing the safe removal of cancer-causing asbestos from buildings, according to an internal Environmental Protection Agency report. Inspections of removal sites by state and local officials in Illinois and Michigan were mostly incomplete or not even performed, the inspector general of EPA’s Region 5 in Chicago said in the report.
