Vacation trips to exotic locales are enticing awards for companies to use in running promotional contests. And the Orange County Federal Credit Union figured that it had come up with unusual sites for a promotion it started in March.

In a drawing to be held Friday, the credit union will award the third-place winner a weekend in a Palm Desert luxury hotel and will send the second-place winner to Mandalay Beach Resort at Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, for a weekend.

The grand prize? A fun-filled week in fantastic Fiji--the island nation east of Australia and New Caledonia that was taken over on May 14 in a military coup.

“There were some people who weren’t sure they wanted to win the grand prize anymore,” said Karen Moyer, the credit union’s vice president for marketing. “I was very dismayed when it (the coup) happened. You never hear anything about Fiji--until I have a promotion on it.”

For those a bit apprehensive about winning the grand prize, the credit union has decided to offer an alternative--a week in Tahiti.
