Leaf Blowers May Be Banned in Pasadena

Leaf blowers may soon be a thing of the past in this city.

In a 4-2 vote, the Board of Directors tentatively approved a ban on the noisy portable blowers used to clean yards because of the nuisance they cause in residential neighborhoods.

The board instructed City Atty. Victor Kaleta to draft an ordinance that would ban the machines from residential neighborhoods.

Kaleta said it would probably be 30 days before he could present the ordinance to the board for review.

Pasadena would be the fifth city in the state to ban leaf blowers, joining Palos Verdes Estates, Lomita, Beverly Hills and Carmel.

The controversial proposal is opposed by gardeners and some residents who turned out in force at the board meeting. They contend that the ban would force the return of the costly and time-consuming process of using a hose and a rake to clean up leaves, and increase water usage in the city.

But other residents say the noisy, gas-powered machines disrupt quiet neighborhoods and cause more trouble than they are worth.
