The third annual Community Protectors Award Luncheon will be held today at noon. The ceremony honors 12 police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and paramedics for their community service. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Carol Painter will be the first woman recipient. Actor Merlin Olson will be master of ceremonies for the banquet at the Sheraton Universal Hotel. Tickets are $25. The Valley Shelter will celebrate its first anniversary with a dinner-dance today at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. The program will feature Los Angeles County Supervisors Mike Antonovich and Ed Edelman, both being honored for their work with the homeless. A 12-minute version of the documentary “San Fernando Valley’s Homeless” will be shown. The shelter, founded in April 1986, treats the problems of the homeless in the Valley. Proceeds will benefit the group, as well as L.A. Family Housing’s Breed Street Shelter and the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter. Cocktails begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 each. The American Cancer Society, San Fernando Valley Unit, will present its “Celebrate Life” award Friday at the Airtel Plaza Hotel, 7277 Vanjean Ave., Van Nuys. Twenty finalists have been chosen from throughout the San Fernando Valley and Glendale to exemplify people who have overcome obstacles, contributed to the community and inspired others with their positive outlook. Jess Marlow, KNBC Channel 4 anchorman, will be master of ceremonies for the event, which begins at 9:30 a.m. There is no charge. For information, call 818-989-5555.

Five Southern California social service groups will be honored Friday at the third annual Woodview-Calabasas Hospital Community Service Awards Luncheon at the Calabasas Inn. Among the recipients will be Project Reach to Enable Prevention (PREP II) in Camarillo for its work with children 12 to 18 years old. The program provides lectures on crime, delinquency, intervention and prevention. The Rape and Sexual Abuse Center of Ventura County (RASAC), also in Camarillo, will be recognized for its educational programs and prevention services throughout Ventura County.
