The Air Force, citing budget limitations and congressional restrictions, formally ended a program to develop small nuclear power reactors for use in the aftermath of a nuclear war. The Multi-Megawatt Terrestrial Power Plant Program had been studied by the Air Force and the Energy Department since 1982. They had planned to spend between $11 million and $13 million on the design work over a two-year period. The overall program could have cost billions of dollars.
