By a majority of more than 2 to 1, voters in Ireland approved forging closer ties with the European Communities. Prime Minister Charles Haughey hailed the outcome after having warned of “economic catastrophe” and possible withdrawal from the Common Market if the voters had rejected the plan, already approved by the 11 other members. Known as the Single European Act, the plan calls for foreign policy coordination and paves the way for a genuinely free market within the bloc by 1992.
